Razer Piranha - Review

Introduction

We have the great privilege to do yet another review for the gamer oriented company Razor. Today we took a look at the Piranha one of razors high end headsets. I was really exited to do this review because my favorite and the most addicting game i play involves using your voice to coordinate attack squads and to command your army to get the job done so this piece of equipment already makes my game that much more enjoyable.

Closer look

Arriving package

Back of the box

The Piranha came in a sharp looking box. As every product by Razer, this packages is packed with logos and pictures of the product. On the back of the box Razer has included specifications and some features about the product.

Top of the box

Right side

On the top and the sides of the box i found more logos. Geez Razer wants to make sure you know this product is manufactured by them.:)

Back data sheet

Open up

As i mentioned earlier, on the back of the box Razer included all of the specifications and information about Piranha. I feel that it is important to know everything up front when you are purchasing anything in a shiny box:)

Exact fit

Out of the box

When removed the enclosed box out of the shell, there it was. The Piranha! Everything was placed in the right order and everything was secured to the box..

Booklet

"Cult of Razer"

In addition to the Piranha i found an "Certificated of authenticity". Everything i have read on the package so far is oriented towards hard core gamers. Even small things like "You are not part of the Cult of Razer" is very cool.

Logos

Out of the box

On the back of the Certificate of Authencity it says "For games. By gamers." Razer is specializes in products for games. Now everything make sense:P

Jacks

Volume control

The connectors of the Piranha are pretty much self explanatory. We have one 1/8th of an inch jack for the sound, one 1/8th of an inch for the microphone and a USB connector.

Side shot

Side shot

As i worked myself up to the earphones i discovered that the cord was wrapped in a some kind of polyester mesh. This gave the cord durability and style. About 2 feet a way from the earphones i also found the sound controller. You can mute the mic or use the controller to adjust the volume of the sound.

Headset

Head cushion

The actual Piranha is rather "Perfect" in size. If you look at it from every angle it looks like it would fit any style of a head. On inside top of the Piranha i found a patch of cushion for the head.

Earpiece

Stylish logo

On the inside of the earphone, speakers also have the coushon on them. Later in our extensive testing we will see how the cushion work on the ears. On the outside of the speakers there is a Razer logos on each side. They both light up as you plug the usb cable in.

Retractable microphone

Protective plastic

What would a gaming earphones be without a microphone?! Piranha has a highly sensitive microphone that is pretty much perfect distance a way from the face.

Microphone

Piranha

A sensitive microphone is very important feature when it comes to the latest games. On the top of the earphones there is an opening for ventilation and structure.

As you can see from the pictures above and below, Piranha fits right and looks great from both sides of the head. Very stylish while playing a game:)

Testing

At first glance you notice this isn't like every other headset you get from your local computer store it has a volume control right on the cord that enables you to tone down the noise if the game you're playing is taking up the whole screen which is more than likely the case it even allows you to turn off the microphone a sort of safety feature so that if your computer ever gets hacked the person can't listen in to your personal conversation that might be taking place in the room or if your just to annoyed to talk to anyone on the server. The cord it's self is quite unusual it goes from the jack the the splitter in the normal rubber coated cord we are use to for headphones and other electronic devices then after the splitter it starts to get a little strange the cord turns into a tightly woven braided cloth that runs from the splitter to the headset.

The cloth on the cord acts like armor for the cord it's very durable not to easy to puncture so it wont tear if it snags something when you turn you head or move to grab something really well thought out idea. The head set has three jacks on it one for audio, one for a microphone and it has a usb connection on it when i saw this i was a little confused as to why they would put a usb connection on the headset?

The suspense was killing me so i ran to my computer and plugged in the three plugs to my surprise the headset had stylish blue lights built on the side of the headsets ear pieces and on the volume control. If you do your homework anything with a blue light or glow attracts gamer like a bug zappers attracts bugs there is something about blue that screams out style and you will be the envy of any lan party you attend.

Another great feature is somewhat of a common feature but should be noted. On the left side of the headset is an adjustable microphone that can be put from the tip of your head right down to your bottom lip making it easy to get it to the right position for you the gamer it also make it much easier to store when your done playing with your headset. This headset is great whether you have a head the size of a water melon or as small as a softball these bad boys adjust accordingly to your demands. The ear pieces are made of a soft cloth like material that is quite comfortable they even took time to factor in that the very top of your head needs a little comfort loving as well so they put a descent amount of padding up there to add to the overall comfort of the headset. This padding isn't like 1980 technology which is just cheap foam rubber stuff that tears after awhile and you end up with a line of glue residue instead of padding this stuff is made from higher grade materials that are equally as comfortable as they are durable you got to love today's technology.

Conclusion

So i got the very exiting job to test this headset out and boy i put this thing to good use. I  was playing multiple games that you use your headset and especially your microphone to coordinate attacks and to say things like "Watch out for the Tank!" i'd never have enough time to type this statement before the Tank would dissemate my team mate so the microphone has become just as essential to the game play as the keyboard and mouse are to the game itself. While playing i noticed that the microphone works very well it has a filter built in to filter out background noise so its just your voice that's going through and not the tv. In fact the microphone works so well that i had to turn down the microphone because other players were complaining i was killing there ears. The sound quality of the head phones is amazing they have really good depth picking up little things that other cheaply made speaker have missed in the past they pick up the lows the mid's and the the highs i wish my car had this kind of sound quality.

Some Pros we found:

Overall i was very pleased with this product. If you go from just having regular speakers and a microphone to having this Headset by Razor it's like night and day. So if you're on the market for a new headset then look no further than the Razor Piranha amazing quality, very durable they can take a drop or two, Really good sound quality and microphone quality, and decent comfort i would highly recommend these to any gamer they also are great for you music lovers out there as well.

Some Cons we found:

I must say there was only one thing that was a con but this only effects the hardcore gamers out there. I said i did extensive testing of this headset which consisted of hours upon hours of game play the headset feels great of your head from zero to eight hours but when you start to hit anything after eight straight hours of wear you have to take them off for awhile to give your ears a break. but like i said only effects hardcore gamers that play eight plus hours a day even that slight con wouldn't keep me from buying this headset.
